Battle River Railway Modellers

About Us

We are a National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) sanctioned club that actively promotes “the World’s Greatest Hobby” in our community and province. We are a modular group, following North American HO Free-Mo standards. At present, we have 15 active members.

F.A.Q.

Who can I talk to about membership?

We would love to hear from you. Call Ron Symes at 403–741–6516, drop us an email, message us through Facebook, or simply stop by the club layout in Wetaskiwin Mall on Wednesdays or Saturdays during Farmers Market hours and ask a member.

Do I have to model HO scale?

Although we encourage all scales (and our members model several), our club events are limited to HO.

Is there any age restriction?

Yes. Due to the value of the equipment being used and the fact that we do not currently have a mentoring program for junior members, membership is restricted to those over 18.

Does it cost anything to join?

Yes. Our current dues are $120.00 per year. This may be paid in full in advance or in monthly installments. The dues pay for club projects, certain social events, and the Canadian Northern Society membership. Each member is encouraged to have at least one module, a DCC-equipped locomotive and a throttle within a reasonable time. The cost will be in the vicinity of $400.00 for all of these, but they are owned by you, the member.

What if I don’t know anything about model railroading?

That’s fine. If you are willing to learn, we have members who are skilled in construction, wiring, electronics and detailing who would love to share their knowledge with you.

What is the time commitment?

You can choose the amount of time you spend on your hobby. The last Thursday of each month is a business and planning meeting at the Camrose Railway Station. We also participate in 2–3 shows per years. A Free-Mo gathering is held in August of each year at the Big Valley Agriplex and modelers attend from all over Alberta and BC. This is not a club event but many members attend. September is the Great Edmonton Train Show and we exhibit every year. This is a club event and you will be expected to “pull a shift” or two.
